Chapter Twelve

Gabe

We’ve been back from Malibu for a week and I’ve been able to convince her to spend the last couple of nights with me. Jasmine’s been letting her guard down since our weekend together. I feel like a pussy, but I’m falling in love with her. Yes, we have phenomenal sex, but there is so much more to it. She’s so smart and funny. When she lets her hair down, it’s fun to watch, even more so because it’s obvious she doesn’t do it often.

My mom is coming to town in a couple of weeks to see Jill and me and she wants to meet Jasmine. Eventually, my dad will come too. I’ve still been debating on finding her dad, but I think it could really help her. Plus, the bastard should meet the children he abandoned so he can see how wonderful they turned out.

I look at my watch. Jill’s coming over because I want to get to the bottom of whatever the fuck is wrong with her. While I wait for her to show up, I call one of my contacts in New York, who is supposed to be looking at properties for me to check out and possibly buy.

“This is Matt.”

“Matt Mortenson—Gabe Johnson. How are you?” I ask. The guy’s an asshole, but a good businessman.

“I’m good, Gabe. I’ve found three properties that I’m going to have my assistant e-mail you about. One is out of the price range you asked for, but the turnaround could make you a lot of money in the end. Take a look at them and let me know if you want me to look into them further. So, how’s that hot sister of yours? Bring her to New York next time you come.” See, asshole.

“You know that’s never going to happen, Matt.” I don’t bother mentioning that I’ve caught him more than enough times with different women in his office. Of course, I shouldn’t have expected any less since he only hires porn star wannabes.

Jill appears in the doorway to my office, so I let Matt go and get up. My sister looks like shit, but she’s trying to hide it with makeup. I may be a man, but I know when something is not right with her. Her smile as she comes in doesn’t reach her eyes and I get a sinking feeling in my gut.

“Hey, baby girl. How are you?” I wrap my arms around her and can feel how thin she is. She’s always been slender, but she’s like skin and bones. What in the hell could make her lose so much weight so fast?

“I’m good. I hear you and Jazz had a fantastic time in Malibu. She’s been all smiles this week. I like it.”

I’m happy to hear that, but first I need to find out what’s wrong with Jill. I lead her to the couch and we sit down. She won’t look me in the eye and keeps picking at her fingernails. It’s the same nervous habit she’s had since she was a kid.
